Abstract

: Keratoconus is a degenerative corneal disease that appears in youth and progresses over time, causing visual alterations that affect quality of life. Early diagnosis is essential to prevent complications and preserve vision. This study aimed to describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of keratoconus patients treated at a regional referral hospital in Peru.

Methods: An observational and descriptive study was conducted at the Hospital Regional Docente Clínico Quirúrgico Daniel Alcides Carrión de Huancayo during 2023–2024. Medical records were analyzed, and sociodemographic and clinical variables were recorded, including age, sex, visual acuity, refraction, keratometry, topographic pattern, and disease stage.

Results: A total of 134 eyes from 67 patients were evaluated. The mean age was 24.5 years, with a predominance of males and urban residents. Progressive deterioration of visual acuity and refraction was observed according to keratoconus stage. The most frequent topographic pattern was bowtie in early stages and snowman in advanced stages. Regarding treatment, most patients received corrective lenses or intrastromal ring segments, while a minority were referred for corneal transplantation.

Conclusion: In this population, keratoconus mainly affects young urban adults and follows a progressive course with significant visual repercussions. The findings highlight the importance of early detection, timely access to therapies, and educational strategies in eye health.
